WeChat Pay Guide for International Tourists

WeChat Pay is everywhere in China — shops, restaurants, taxis, even street vendors. Here's how to set it up as an international tourist.

1. Register WeChat

Download WeChat and sign up with your phone number. You can use a foreign number.

2. Verify with your passport

Go to Me → Services → Wallet and choose real-name verification. Select "Foreign passport", upload your passport photo, and complete the verification.

3. Link an international card

Add a Visa, Mastercard, or JCB card in the Wallet. WeChat Pay now supports international cards at most merchants.

4. Where it works

WeChat Pay works at restaurants, supermarkets, taxis, metro systems, and most shops. Look for the green WeChat Pay QR code. Note: some features (like red packets) are restricted for foreign accounts.
